Mopa airport: SC refuses to set up Bench for Goa’s plea

New Delhi, October 23

In a setback to the Goa Government, the Supreme Court on Wednesday refused to set up a Special Bench to urgently take up its petition for resumption of construction of a greenfield airport at Mopa in northern part of the state.

GMR Goa International Airport Limited (GGIAL) had won the bid for the airport under build-own-operate-transfer scheme. But the SC suspended the environmental clearance given to it following allegations that over 5,000 trees would be cut for the project even as the government contended it would lead to the project missing its first phase deadline of 2020.

On behalf of the state, Attorney General KK Venugopal said construction of the airport was stalled for the last 10 months and the state’s petition needed to be taken up. “We are not in a position to constitute a Special Bench now. Our present situation does not permit us to do this,” said the Bench said. — TNS
