New Delhi, September 23
Despite an “uneven” monsoon, the country’s foodgrain production will be more than the average of the kharif season in past five years.
As per First Advance Estimates for 2019-20 for the season, the total foodgrain production is estimated at 140.57 million tonne, higher by 8.44 MT than “average foodgrain production of previous five years (2013-14 to 2017-18)”. However, it is lower than the production achieved last year — 141.71 MT in the kharif season of the 2018-19 crop year (July-June).
Sowing of the kharif (summer) crops is almost complete and harvesting will begin from October onwards.
The assessment of production of different crops is based on the feedback received from states and information available from other sources, says the Agriculture Ministry.
Kharif rice during 2019-20 is estimated at 100.35 MT, higher by 6.80 MT than the five years’ average production of 93.55 MT but lower than last yerar’s 102.13 MT. Pulses production has been estimated to be lower at 8.23 MT as against 8.59 MT. — TNS
