The Congress today suffered a setback in the northeast with the Tripura unit chief putting in his resignation, accusing the party of ignoring warnings of corruption involving incumbent general secretary Luizinho Falerio.

In his letter to Falerio, Pradyot Debbarman accused the Congress of destroying the northeast with one “incompetent general secretary after the other”. He lamented that former Congress chief Rahul Gandhi did not stand behind his young team as much as he should have. Debbarman, the son of the last king of Tripura, had assumed charge before the Lok Sabha elections and helped improve the Congress vote share.

His letter levelled serious accusations against Falerio. “The AICC has destroyed the northeast with one incompetent general secretary after another. If we in the northeast thought CP Joshi was the reason we lost state after state, you (Falerio) will be known as the person who destroyed the essence of the Congress in the Northeast,” Debbarman said.

The former Congress leader accused Falerio of hobnobbing with the BJP in the northeast, attempting to dislodge Mukul Sangma as CLP Leader in Meghalaya and fixing a meeting of a BJP leader with Rahul Gandhi to form a non-BJP government in Tripura with the help of Communists.

“The last straw for me was when the general secretary humiliated me before the AICC leadership in Delhi and told me to either withdraw my Supreme Court case demanding NRC in Tripura or resign. You pressurised me to appoint BJP defectors on key Congress positions,” Debbarman said to Falerio.

DEORA UNRUFFLED BY INSINUATIONS

New Delhi: Former Mumbai Congress president Milind Deora on Tuesday “regretted” insinuations about his “future political path” following an exchange of tweets between him and PM Narendra Modi over the latter’s Houston event.  “I will serve my country to the best of my ability and I will remain bipartisan when it comes to issues of national interest and foreign policy… ,” he said.
