Last-ball howler by umpires hands Mumbai six-run victory

Bengaluru, March 28

An umpiring howler on the last delivery cost Royal Challengers Bangalore dearly as Mumbai Indians pipped the hosts by six runs largely due to Jasprit Bumrah's brilliant spell at the death in an IPL encounter.

Needing six to take the game to the Super Over, Lasith Malinga's final delivery to Shivam Dube was a no-ball that was missed by the umpires as RCB managed 181/5 in reply to 187/8 by Mumbai.

Had the no-ball been given, AB de Villiers, who nearly took his team to victory with an unbeaten 70 off 41 balls, would have gotten a free-hit. The umpiring mistake left RCB captain Virat Kohli seething in anger. “We are playing at IPL level, not club cricket,” Kohli said. “That's just a ridiculous call on the last ball. The umpires should have their eyes open; it was a no-ball by an inch," he added.

But nothing can be taken away from Bumrah's mastery as he won it for MI with superb 17th (one run and a wicket) and 19th (five runs and a wicket) overs. — PTI

MCC’s U-turn on Ashwin Mankading Buttler

London: The Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has again spoken on Ravichandran Ashwin running out Jos Buttler at the non-striker’s end, saying that it was “not within the spirit of the game”. Two days ago, MCC had put the onus on the batsmen to remain inside the crease until the ball was delivered: “Furthermore, with batsmen now being deemed in or out by millimetres by TV replays on quick singles, it is right that they should remain in their ground at the non-striker’s end until it is fair for them to leave.” MCC has now put the blame on Ashwin. “Having extensively reviewed the incident again and after further reflection we don’t think it was within the spirit of the game,” Fraser Stewart, MCC’s manager of the laws of cricket, said. — PTI
