Modi, Day 1: ‘Dumdaar vs daagdaar’

Akhnoor/Lucknow, March 28

Launching his party’s Lok Sabha poll campaign in three states, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today kept his focus on national security, terrorism and how his “decisive” government showed the courage to conduct a surgical strike in all spheres — land, sky and space.

He addressed rallies at Meerut in Uttar Pradesh, Rudrapur in Uttarakhand and Akhnoor in Jammu and Kashmir — all part of constituencies figuring in the first phase of the poll on April 11.

The contest will be between “dumdaar BJP and daagdaar Opposition,” he said, driving home his point that his party is strong but the Opposition parties are tainted.

At Doomi (Akhnoor), Modi raised an anti-Pakistan pitch to take on the Congress for “ganging up” with pro-separatist National Conference and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to stop the BJP.

He also warned Pakistan against any misdemeanour on the LoC and the IB.

“After the Balakot airstrikes, PDP and NC leaders have been making provocative statements that are hailed by Pakistan. And the Congress has ganged up with these parties to stop the BJP from retaining power,” Modi said.

The PM said statements of NC and PDP leaders were being quoted by TV anchors across the border to launch a vicious campaign against India. “Supporters of terrorists within, and outside, want to get rid of this Chowkidar,” he said.

He also sought to draw attention towards a recent controversial statement of NC candidate from Baramulla Mohd Akbar Lone, who shouted “Pakistan zindabad” at an election rally last week.

“Sometimes, I wonder if the present Congress is the same that Sardar Patel and Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose were once part of. I say this because the statements made by some Congress, PDP and NC leaders were hailed in Pakistan because of their anti-India content,” he said.

The PM also raked up the recent controversial statement of Sam Pitroda without quoting his name. “One of the seniormost leaders of the Congress, who manages the party’s overseas affairs, recently gave a clean chit to the terrorists and Pakistan. Should something like this be said by public leaders to demoralise our people and our forces?” he said.

He said every vote to the BJP in the Lok Sabha elections would demoralise not only supporters of terrorists within the country, but also instil fear among those running terror factories across the border. “Give an effective response to terrorists and their sympathisers by electing a strong BJP government,” he urged the people.

In Meerut, he claimed that “chowkidar ki sarkaar” had the courage to conduct surgical strikes in all spheres — land, sky and space. He accused the UPA government of postponing the decision to shoot down satellite despite demands by scientists.

He dubbed the alliance of the Samajwadi Party (SP), Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) in Uttar Pradesh as “saraab”, saying it was harmful for one's health and the state. “Saraab” in Urdu means mirage, while a similar sounding “sharaab” in Hindi stands for alcohol.

‘Need saboot or sapoot?’

Do we need saboot or sapoot... those who seek evidence (of airstrikes) are challenging the sapoot... It is Congress’ job to cower in fear. ‘Chowkidar’ knows no fear. All he knows is put up a dour fight. —Narendra Modi, Prime Minister

PM: Avoid ‘saraab’

Sapa (SP) ka ‘sa’, Ralod (RLD) ka ‘raa’ aur Baspa (BSP) ka ‘ba’, matlab ‘saraab’. SP, RLD, BSP, ye saraab aapko barbaad kar degi. —Narendra Modi, Prime Minister
