Jordan Peele’s new horror movie not only pays fervent homage to Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining but also references the Old Testament to suggest a series of linkages that hold Us responsible for the damage we’ve caused to life and the planet. Here, every shot means something much more than the obvious while the family in danger construct is a mere red herring for what plagues us as a human race.
Peele not only wrote but also directed and produced this film which opens up windows of doubt in our belief patterns and makes us freak out on our own misguided vanities. The story seems a little bizarre at first glance but as you start ruminating about the experience, you will gain more understanding of what the filmmaker was trying to put forward as a caution regarding man’s contempt and disregard for fellow humans, other living beings and the environment.
Accompanied by her husband Gabe (Winston Duke), son Jason (Evan Alex) and daughter Zora (Shahadi Wright Joseph), Adelaide Wilson (Lupita Nyong’o) returns to the beachfront home where she grew up as a child. There’s a palpable tenseness surrounding her interactions with her family and soon we get to understand that she is troubled by a traumatic experience from the past. When four strangers descend upon the house, she is left with little recourse other than facing up to her demons.
Peele’s film works as a delightful home invasion story as well as a diabolical horror epic that forces us to rethink on the roles we play in real life. His narrative amalgamates comedy, horror and social commentary while staying charmingly unhinged and throwing up questions regarding our own behaviours. Lupita Nyong’o is singularly outstanding, the other players lend the necessary support to make her presence strongly unnerving. Mike Gioulakis memorable cinematography, Nicholas Monsour’s assured editing and Michael Abels’ musical compositions add strong power to this intriguing horror thriller that chills your bones!
