Art for peace

Mahatma Gandhi had said, “A man is but the product of his thoughts, what he thinks, he becomes.” Chandigarh-based Kanwal Pal sculpts his thoughts into reality and his work of art is a tribute to the Father of the Nation as well as his parents.

The theme of the exhibition is MG@150 and it commemorates the 150th birth anniversary of Mahatma Gandhi, this year, on October 2.  The artist has tried to look at the beliefs and ideologies of Gandhi through the eyes of a child.

Children have always been the muse of Kanwal and he has captured them in all moods and forms—playing with balloons or surrounded by butterflies or toffees falling out of the sky for a child!

The installation, Foot Steps, which shows a child leader filling in the shoes of Gandhi, with followers belonging to different castes, races and backgrounds is eye catching. The trademarks of Gandhiji—the charkha, spectacles, footwear and the walking stick—have been strategically put in all corners for the special effect.

The artist has an interesting take on the famous photograph of Mahatma Gandhi with his grandson Kanu and he does that by replacing the stick with a pencil, a tool to shape the future.

“If we wish to create lasting peace we must begin with children” Kanwal Pal echoes Mahatma’s thoughts which he translated into creating a ‘lasting piece of art’ which provides peace to the minds.
