The fate of several high profile candidates will be sealed on Monday when the fourth and last phase of polling will be held across Maharashtra on 17 constituencies. In the 2014 General Election, the BJP won eight out of these 17 seats and its ally Shiv Sena bagged nine.

The constituencies going to elections are: Mumbai North, Mumbai North-West, Mumbai North-East, Mumbai North-Central, Mumbai South-Central, Mumbai South, Nandurbar, Dhule, Dindori, Nashik, Palghar, Bhiwandi, Kalyan, Thane, Maval, Shirur and Shirdi. Of these 17 constituencies, the highest number of voters, 23,70,276, are registered in Thane and lowest, 14,40,142, are registered in Mumbai South-Central constituency.

Among the big names that are in the fray include top leaders of the BJP, Congress, Shiv Sena and the NCP. In Mumbai, the big names in the fray include Congress’ Milind Deora, Priya Dutt, Sanjay Nirupam and Urmila Matondkar, the BJP’s Gopal Shetty and Poonam Mahajan and the Shiv Sena’s Arvind Sawant and Gajanan Kirtikar. The NCP has just one candidate, Sanjay Dina Patil in the race. 

Across the state, the heavyweights in the race include Sharad Pawar’s grand-nephew Parth and Chhagan Bhujbal’s nephew Sameer.

In all 373 candidates are in the fray in the 17 Lok Sabha seats which go to the poll today, according to information available from the state election commission. In all 33,314 polling stations have been set up across the 17 constituencies. The number of eligible voters amount to 3.11 crore.

Of these 1,66,31,707 are men and 1,45,59,698 women while 1,418 electors are registered as third gender.

The Mumbai police said in a statement that 40,400 security personnel have been deployed in the city alone. Apart from the city police, contingents of the Anti-Terror Squad and commandos of the Quick Response Team have been deployed, officials said.

Polling for the previous three phases in Maharashtra was held on April 11 (seven seats), April 18 (10 seats) and April 23 (14 seats). As part of their pre-poll precautions, the police have externed 204 criminals from Mumbai, taken bonds of security from 8,117 from history sheeters and others with questionable credentials, served notices to 5,771 others, including six under the Maharashtra Prevention of Dangerous Activities Act, 1981.
