Houston, April 15
Christian Garin became the first Chilean to win an ATP Tour title in 10 years when he beat Norway’s Casper Ruud 7-6(4) 4-6 6-3 at the US Men’s Clay Court Championship on Sunday.
The turning point came at 2-2 in the final set, when Ruud, who was playing in his first ATP Tour final, was unable to capitalise on three break-point chances.
Garin broke in the next game by chasing down a drop shot and flicking a forehand winner. Serving for the title at 5-3, the Chilean then hammered an ace to set up championship point. A heavy forehand on the next point decided the match.
The 22-year-old became the first Chilean to win an ATP Tour title since Fernando Gonzalez in Vina del Mar in 2009. The victory was Garin’s second over the Norwegian in a month. He also defeated Ruud in the Brasil Open semifinals.

Monte Carlo: David Goffin notched his 10th victory at the Monte Carlo Masters, beating Argentine Guido Andreozzi 6-1 6-4. The 2017 semifinalist played clinically under pressure, saving five of six break-points en route to the second round. Goffin will meet Serbian Dusan Lajovic in his next match, following the world No. 48’s 6-4 6-4 win against Tunisian Malek Jaziri.
Philipp Kohlschreiber will meet top seed Novak Djokovic after defeating Japanese Taro Daniel 6-1, 6-3. Last month at the BNP Paribas Open, Kohlschreiber stunned Djokovic 6-4 6-4 to snap the world No. 1’s eight-match winning streak.
Mikhail Kukushkin defeated Frenchman Jeremy Chardy 6-3 6-4 and will next meet sixth seed Stefanos Tsitsipas. — Agencies
