Man’s best friend, forever

Mona

When Lilly Singh aka ‘iisuperwomanii’ took to Instagram to send a teaser of the big news, she started, ‘With the grace of God and support from my dog, I’m making the biggest announcement of my career tonight.’ As she becomes the first brown woman to have her own late night show on a broadcast network, it’s God and her dog who made it happen!

This is superwoman by no means the only one who owes it to her four-legged friend, many of us find in our dogs the support system of our world, whether it’s starting life from a scratch in a new city, new country; getting over an illness or bereavement and much more. Here’s catching up with some dog-lovers from tricity.

Two of a kind

Preeti Singh shares a special bond with her adopted Cocker Spaniel, which she’s named Sizzler. Both of them epileptic, they watch out for each other. “One day I was cooking and suddenly fell backwards due to a seizure, it was Sizzler who raised an alarm and woke up my father as well as daughter to ensure that a big accident was averted,” recalls Preeti.

Dogs have an intuition and can raise an alarm right before a seizure is about to hit, which makes them a lifeline in an epileptic person’s life. “Epilepsy (mirgi) still carries that stigma, but a dog never judges you. Sizzler was abandoned by his family for his epileptic fits; together we make a truly happy life.”

Bond beyond life

Back in his teens, entrepreneur Maninder Mani bonded with his German Shepherd, Dynum, the most. He recalls how on a school trip from Guru Nanak Fifth Centenary School, Mussoorie, they went for rafting to Hardwar. As the raft toppled over a huge wave, young Maninder, without a life jacket, went deep inside water.

“It was a miracle that I was found and pulled out.” Called home the very next day, his mother shared that an astrologer predicted danger to Maninder’s life. Exactly the same time when he was struggling for breath under water, his very healthy six-and-a-half-year old Dynum died all of a sudden!  “Call it a coincidence or bonds beyond life; my family to date believes that my beloved dog took the life threat on him to save mine.”

We are family

Born and bred in Singapore, when Amrit Aulakh moved base to City Beautiful, she brought along her American Pitbull Razia along. “She’s like my daughter, I couldn’t have left her back,” says the Saade Aale actress. “At this home away from home, Razia is my constant support system. Whether it’s a mad day at work or missing folks back home, Razia helps me remain cheerful. Through your ups and downs, they never give up on you,” she adds.

In sickness & health

Sara Gurpal works with Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals-38 West and plays an active role in finding a home for them. And, her world revolves around Aladin, a Shih Tzu. Once when she was on a long tour to America, Aladin missed her so much that he fell sick, making a frantic Sara drop everything and rush home!

Now Aladin accompanies Sara on her longer trips, “I usually fly Air India and they take good care of him,” she says. In their time together, Sara recalls how on bedrest for 20 days post a major surgery, it was this cute Shih Tzu who kept her company day and night. “Family and friends would come and go, but not Aladin, he did not leave my side even once.”

Embracing life

Life of visa consultant Rupesh Nigha was in for a 360-degree twist when a Pitbull, Bruto, came calling. While initial few months were tough with everything going haywire - furniture torn, routines disturbed, neighbours vexed - it also brought along a diversion and a happy one at that.

“Two years now, Bruto has rubbed his colour on us,” he says while cuddling his plump pooch. A few months back as the family struggled an untimely bereavement, Bruto pulled the entire family out of the shock and sadness single-handedly. “Bruto has helped us embrace life all over again.”
