‘Marvel’lous melody

Neha Kirpal

When music composer-singer AR Rahman was looking for someone to pen the Hindi anthem for Avengers: Endgame, he was looking for someone who understands modern sensibilities and is also well-versed with the world of poetry and song writing; someone who catches the mood of the times without letting go of the soul of Hindi and Urdu poetry. His search ended at Nirmika Singh. Composed and sung by Oscar-winner Rahman, the song was launched in Mumbai earlier this month with Avengers’ director Joe Russo in attendance.

As someone who writes in both English and Hindi, Nirmika has penned a range of songs from euphoric brand anthems to delicate love ballads and spunky dance hits. The Marvel anthem marks her debut film project, and she is excited about working with composer extraordinaire Rahman. Describing the experience as both surreal and inspiring, she says, “Rahman sir is a visionary who believes in encouraging budding talent. I have learnt so much from him about music, cinema and arts in the short period that we spent in the studio. I can say that in him I have found a precious mentor and guide.”

The mood of the song is celebratory, both musically and lyrically. “With its robust rock arrangement and catchy tune, the song carries Rahman sir’s signature style,” says Nirmika. Her lyrics, specifically its hook line, Roke na rukenge, complements the mood of the melody. “We wanted to create a song that celebrates freedom and determination, and we’re very happy that we have a beautiful song,” she adds.

Nirmika has earlier collaborated with Bollywood composer and Coke Studio prodigy Clinton Cerejo, who gave her the first opportunity to create a brand anthem for Hyundai automobiles. She then went on to work on several other advertising projects with him and also penned the lyrics for two of the songs by his new band, Shor Police.

Apart from this, Nirmika also has a Hindi poetry project called #AurSuno that combines spoken word and music. Something that started as an Instagram hobby last year is now growing into a video series. “Under #AurSuno, I try and articulate in my mother tongue a variety of complex emotions under the broad themes of love, feminism, creativity and success. This project is the closest to my heart and I am really looking forward to expanding its scope and range,” she adds.
