Rs 1.8 cr seized from CM convoy on PM rally eve

New Delhi, April 3

The Congress today alleged a cash-for-vote scandal in Arunachal Pradesh and demanded the ouster of BJP’s West Arunachal candidate and Chief Minister Pema Khandu.

Congress chief spokesperson Randeep Surjewala alleged that the BJP is resorting to “money power” in northeast as it faced an “imminent defeat.”

The Congress cited a midnight raid on the convoy of Arunachal Pradesh CM Khandu, Deputy CM Chowna Mein and BJP’s Arunachal president Tapir Gao in which it said Rs 1.8 crore in stacks of hard cash was found.

“This is brazen corruption and poll violation. We need to know if the money was meant for PM Modi’s Pasighat rally in Arunachal Pradesh today,” Surjewala said. The Congress played social media videos showing cash being counted by police officers in the presence of Election Commission’s Expenditure Officer Samrita Kaur Gill.

“Gill’s Observer Code is R-26172. DC Pasighat Kinny Singh is being heard in the video and stacks of cash are clearly visible. The cash was being reportedly transported in certain vehicles parked at the Siang Guest House, Pasighat. The candidature of Tapir Gao from West Arunachal should be terminated henceforth. CM Pema Khandu should resign following cash for vote scandal,” the Congress said.

Surjewala asked if Rs 1.8 crore was being transferred for PM’s Arunachal rally, where did such a large amount of cash come from. “Is this not a clear case of chowkidar being a thief? Isn’t concealing and hoarding cash during elections corrupt practice and a violation of Section 123 (1) of the Representation of the People Act 1951 and Section 171B of the IPC and a ground for termination of candidature,” he said. — TNS
