Saluting the spirit of India

How did you conceive the concept of Bharat Ki Baat, given that it involves various topics about the country?

I was sick and tired of listening to all the negativity on breaking news! I always wondered why are we shown in such bad light? We are a country of good people, exceptional minds and great philosophy. So why not talk about our strengths, our accomplishments, our success. And that’s how Bharat Ki Baat was conceptualised.

Any special learning from the show?

People from places that we covered in the show may not be as polished as we are, but they welcome you with an open heart. So this was my biggest lesson.

What was the most difficult aspect of the show?

The most difficult part was to shoot and portray India and Indians in their true avatar. We had to throw away the spectacles of elitism. We had to submit ourselves to the greatness of the country.

Is Vivek Agnihotri a better husband or a better director?

I guess nothing can be judged in isolation. A director is good only when he is inspiring someone to give his or her best. Similarly, a husband-wife relationship grows only when there is enough inspiration to keep loving, caring and respecting each other. Before Vivek became my director or my husband, he was a good friend. And I think my friend in the past two-and-a-half decades has excelled in both departments.

Vivek directed Bharat Ki Baat and is also director of The Tashkent Files. How difficult or easy was to work with him in two different mediums?

Vivek has been around for the past 25 years and I am working for over four decades now. So it’s no big deal to shed one role and jump on to the next anymore.
