Today’ generation is as conscious about their carbon footprints as their karma and so, veganism wave is surely in! The vegan wave has hit tricity and there are many options for those who want their meal free of meat, poultry, dairy, honey and gelatine.
Pizza sans cheese!
“Things are slowly catching up,” affirms Pancham Prashar, co-founder CueBlocks. “While many places have launched vegan menus, others are happy to tweak a dish or two for you.” Five years a vegan, Pancham has embraced whole food plant based eating lifestyle (as opposed to junk vegan) and hails soy milk and tofu, which have brought most cuisines on a vegan’s platter. Now, vegan cheese is available too.
“Initially when I asked for pizza or pasta sans cheese... that would baffle the chef, but not anymore,” laughs Pancham, who has also taken on the mantle of nutrition coach, happy to share his learning of the last few years.
One for the future
Lumos has added vegan options to their menu too. “Veganism is the future. People from all walks of life are incorporating this lifestyle and it’s not difficult if you choose locally grown food,” shares co-owner, Lumos, Ishan Gupta. Right from vegan breakfast burger, which is served with a pumpkin and bean patty and spiced avocado dressing, to the falafel bowl, they have plenty of Mediterranean options.
If you don’t want to be restricted in choice, AJA is your place to be. “We have a separate vegan menu comprising around a 100 items. From smoothies, ice-creams to vegan cheese, we have it all,” claims Raj Kanwar, owner, AJA.
Special menus
On an average, 25-30 people per month walk in at The Lalit demanding vegan meals. Saurabh Chauhan, food manager, shares, “Our vegan specialities include the Caterpillar roll, Papaya salad, Qing Cai and Miloni Tarkari.” Seconds Dr Pryanka Gupta, co-founder, The Great Bear Kitchen & Microbrewery, “As awareness spreads, lot of guests have started asking for vegan dishes and as a restaurant catering to all age-groups and people with different food preferences, we have made it sure that we have such options.”
Know the term
Veganism, a term that was coined in 1944 in England by Donald Watson, who made a case for vegetarians, has only expanded to a lifestyle that shuns any animal products. One can now also opt for apparel, accessories, cosmetics and even beauty treatments that are vegan. The vegan lifestyle is believed to give better physical, emotional and mental health.
How to order vegan?
- Most Indian meals - dal, sabji, roti, rice - are vegan only, all one needs to avoid is butter or ghee.
- Salads are the easiest starters, just hold the cheese or buttery dressings.
- When ordering burger, leave out cheese and mayo.
- Look for options. Minestrone soup when served in veggie is vegan, so are the French fries.
- In beverages, go for either black/soy milk options.
