Tough day for Indians, invitee Jordan leads with 63

The three Indians on show at the British Masters — Shubhankar Sharma, Gaganjeet Bhullar and SSP Chawrasia — literally ran into rough weather with disappointing cards, even as a 23-year-old invitee, Matthew Jordan, shot a stunning bogey-free 63 to open up a two-shot lead on the opening day. Bhullar had three birdies on the 2nd, 3rd and 7th, but bogeys on the 1st, 8th, 12th and 13th pegged him to 1-over before a birdie on the 15th helped him return to even. Sharma accompanied Bhullar at even-par at tied-66th. Chawrasia ended at 4-over 76.

‘Kohli doesn’t have Dhoni’s match-reading skills’

Virat Kohli might be the world’s best batsman but when it comes to match-reading skills, he is still a few notches below Mahendra Singh Dhoni, feels former India skipper’s childhood coach Keshab Ranjan Banerjee. It has been seen in ODI and T20I matches that during death overs, it is Dhoni who takes over the field placements, with Kohli manning the deep. “In terms of match-reading and forming strategies, Dhoni is still unparallel. Even Kohli doesn’t have that. So, Kohli needs to take some advice. If Dhoni would not have been part of the Indian team, there would be nobody to help him,” Banerjee said. “Virat still needs time as a captain and advice from Dhoni would only help him.”

Akhtar backs Afridi, says he was treated harshly by seniors

Shoaib Akhtar has come in support of his former teammate Shahid Afridi, stating that he was witness to the harsh treatment meted out to the former Pakistan all-rounder by some senior players during his playing days. In his autobiography Game Changer, Afridi has claimed that he was at the receiving end of harsh treatment by seniors during his playing days and cited the example of former coach Javed Miandad, who according to him did not let him bat at the nets before a Test against India in Chennai in 1999. “I think Afridi has written less in his book about the harsh treatment he received from senior players during his playing days. I witnessed some of it with my own eyes and totally agree with him,” Akhtar said. — Agencies
