Barabanki hooch toll climbs to 23

Lucknow, May 29

The Barabanki spurious liquor case has acquired alarming proportions with 23 deaths and another 52 persons struggling for their lives in Barabanki and Lucknow.

The number of deaths can go up as many hospitalised are in serious condition. Among the dead are four persons of the same family — a father and three sons.

The UP Government has confirmed only a dozen deaths and 42 persons as being hospitalised in Barabanki and Lucknow. IG (Law and Order) Praveen Kumar said the investigation revealed that excise inspector Ramteerth Maurya and the license-holder of the government shop, Danveer Singh, were partners in the crime. Maurya has been suspended and arrested along with Danveer Singh. The liquor was bought from the shop by persons of 17 villages who died or are ill.

One of the accused, Pappu Jaiswal, was arrested on Wednesday after being hit in the leg during an encounter with the police. The others arrested on Tuesday night were Sunil Jaiswal, Shivam Jaiswal and Pitambar. The police are still searching for another accused, Manish Singh. Danveer Singh, it is said, sold the liquor after adulterating it with the full knowledge of the excise inspector Maurya. — TNS
