The BJP today won all seven Lok Sabha seats in Delhi, pushing its nearest rivals Congress and the Aam Aadmi Party to second and third position, respectively.
The BJP's overall performance in the national capital, which witnessed a triangular contest, was miles ahead of its opponents. Even as the counting was underway in all seven seats till late evening, the BJP had secured more than 56 per cent of votes, more than the combined vote share of the Congress (22.4 per cent) and the AAP (18.4 per cent).
The BJP led in all seven seats since the commencement of counting at 8 am. The Congress was on second position in five seats — West Delhi, New Delhi, North-East, Chandni Chowk and East Delhi.
The AAP was on the second position in North-West Delhi and South Delhi. BJP's Chandni Chowk candidate and sitting MP Dr Harsh Vardhan was voted 4,31,712 votes (52.68 per cent), defeating his nearest rival JP Agarwal of the Congress who got just 2,44,312 votes.
BJP's East Delhi candidate, cricketer-turned-politician Gautam Gambhir secured 6,92,433 (55.31 per cent), defeating his nearest rival Arvinder Singh Lovely of Congress who got 3,04,123 votes (24.29 per cent).
BJP's New Delhi candidate Meenakshi Lekhi got 5,01,103 votes (54.82 per cent), defeating Congress’ Ajay Maken who got 2,45,261 votes (26.83 per cent).
According to the Election Commission report, BJP's North East Delhi contestant Manoj Tiwari got 7,85,262 votes (53.86 per cent), defeating Congress veteran and Delhi ex-CM Sheila Dikshit, who got 4,21,293 votes (28.89 per cent). Both Tiwari and Dikshit were chief of their party's Delhi unit.
In North-West Delhi, BJP's Hans Raj Hans, a Punjabi folk singer-turned-politician secured 8,47,737 votes (60.47 per cent), defeating his nearest AAP rival Gugan Singh, who got 2,94,662 votes (21.02 per cent).
This is the only constituency where BJP refused to give ticket to its sitting MP Dr Udit Raj who in protest left the BJP and joined Congress.
BJP's West Delhi candidate Parvesh Verma was voted 8,54,328 votes against Balbir Jakhar’s (AAP) 2,48,765.
