Chardham to get round-the-clock power

Dehradun: After Prime Minister Narendra Modi's pilgrimage to Badrinath and Kedarnath, the Uttarakhand Government has decided to provide uninterrupted power supply to all the four highly revered Chardham shrines —Kedarnath, Badrinath, Gangotri and Yamunotri. Uttarakhand Power Corporation Limited will install 33 KV sub-stations, each costing Rs 10 crore, near all the shrines to strengthen the supply. IANS

India’s 2nd detention centre for foreigners

Panaji: Goa CM Pramod Sawant on Wednesday inaugurated a detention centre set up near here to lodge foreign nationals violating visa norms. The government spent Rs 50 lakh to convert the old sub-jail in Mapusa town into the detention centre for foreigners overstaying in Goa after expiry of their documents. The centre has separate rooms for men and women and over 20 inmates can be kept at a time. This is the second such facility in the country, the first being in Delhi. PTI

Set up 24x7 helpline for ECHS patients: AFT  

Chandigarh: Observing there is no provision of getting clearance or reference from ECHS authorities after normal working hours or on holidays due to which beneficiaries become helpless in emergency situations, the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT) has directed the authorities to establish a 24x7 helpline to provide necessary clarifications, guidance and clearance to patients who need medical treatment and advice on urgent or emergent bases. The AFT said a committee had been constituted to review and approve cases requiring reimbursement of medical expenses in excess of the prescribed ECHS rates with effect from January 15, 2019. TNS

Maha writer wins $100,000 Nine Dots Prize  

London: Mumbai-based writer Annie Zaidi was on Wednesday announced as the 2019 winner of the $100,000 Nine Dots Prize, a prestigious book prize created to award innovative thinking that addresses contemporary issues around the world. Zaidi, a freelance writer whose work includes reportage, essays, short stories, poetry and plays, won for her entry 'Bread, Cement, Cactus'--combining memoir and reportage to explore concepts of home and belonging rooted in her experience of contemporary life in India.
