New Delhi, May 31
PM Narendra Modi has sought stepped-up cooperation with Sri Lanka and Mauritius for ensuring security in the Indian Ocean region. PM Modi’s exhortation to leaders of the two island nations is in line with the government’s thrust on cooperation among Indian Ocean littoral states to guard against a disruption of the prevailing power balance.
India has already offered a $500 million line of credit to Mauritius in several areas, including for tackling conventional and unconventional threats from the Indian Ocean. Sri Lanka is partnering with Japan and India for a container terminal in Colombo that would balance the Chinese involvement in the port of Hambantota.
Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena at a press conference later announced that Modi had agreed to visit Colombo. Maldivian media has reported that PM Modi had decided on Male as his first overseas destination after taking over as PM for the second time. — TNS
