Mumbai, May 28

The Mumbai police today arrested Bhakti Mehere, a senior medical student at the state-run BYL Nair Hospital, for allegedly driving a junior colleague, Payal Tadvi, to suicide earlier this month.

The police said they were on the lookout for two more doctors, Hema Ahuja and Ankita Khandelwal, who were accused of harassing Tadvi. In their complaint to the police, the parents and husband of the deceased medical student showed WhatsApp messages shared by Tadvi naming the three doctors for harassing her as she had obtained admission to the course of MD on the quota reserved for STs.

The management of Nair Hospital suspended the head of the gynaecology department, Dr Yi Ching Ling, until further notice for not acting on the complaint filed by Tadvi and her husband Dr Salman.

Minister for Medical Education Girish Mahajan said preliminary investigation into Tadvi’s suicide revealed that she was ragged by the three doctors for being a Scheduled Tribe student. According to sources, nearly 30 staff members at the hospital, including those present at the Operation Theatre on the day of the suicide, told the police that they had seen Tadvi being insulted by the three women.

Tadvi’s husband said he wanted the murder angle probed too. The three women doctors, he said, were present when Tadvi’s hostel room was forced open and she was found hanging from the ceiling fan.
