Doctor’s suicide: All 3 seniors arrested

Mumbai, May 29

Three doctors who were arrested for allegedly driving their colleague to suicide earlier this month have been remanded in three-day police custody.

According to the police, Additional Sessions Judge RM Sadrani today sent doctors Bhakti Mehere, Hema Ahuja and Anikita Khandelwal to police custody till May 31 shortly after their arrest in the case.

While Bhakti was arrested on Tuesday, the other two were arrested shortly after midnight today, according to the police. The three of them, who are second-year MD students at the BYL Nair Hospital, allegedly harassed their junior colleague Payal Tadvi after which she hanged herself in her hostel room earlier this month.

The arrested doctors are also accused of using caste slurs on Tadvi who belonged to a Scheduled Tribe. The police said the three doctors needed to be questioned as to whether they had destroyed any suicide note written by Tadvi. The victim’s husband, also a doctor, had expressed suspicion that the three accused were among those who forced open Tadvi’s hostel room door after she did not respond to their calls.

The three women allegedly escaped from the premises shortly after they realised that Tadvi was dead.

They have been booked under provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, the Anti-Ragging Act, the IT Act and Section 306 (abetment to suicide) of the IPC. Tadvi’s suicide has triggered protests across the state. — TNS
