American actor-singer Nick Jonas and actress Priyanka Chopra Jonas brought a dose of whimsy to the Met Gala 2019 with their appearance as a married couple. Nick, 26, and Priyanka, 36, attended their first Met Gala in New York as a married couple on Monday night.
For the event with theme ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’, Priyanka brought animation to the pink carpet with a vibrant, yet unique Dior gown. She went bold and played up the theme with a zany look in a silver gown with colourful ruffled feathers, a very high leg split, matching cape along with her big hairstyle that included a crown on top!
Her outfit comprised a sheer top, which came with silver criss-cross detailing. Thanks to her high slit, Priyanka flaunted her sheer crystal tights. She glammed up her dramatic look with silver-frosted brows and lashes, and opted for dark burgundy lip colour. She styled her hair in voluminous back-combed waves, but it was her silver spiked crown that caught everyone’s attention in the accessory department.
She completed her look with a pair of silver pumps, purple drop earrings and multi-layered pendants by Chopard. She was styled by Mimi Cuttrell.
Matching up
Nick looked elegant in a white Dior Men tuxedo and glittering silver Christian Louboutin heeled shoes. Nick accessorised with tonnes of diamonds, including ear cuffs by Borgioni and Marli New York, L’Dezen by Payal Shah bracelet and a Djula ring — nearly $100,000 worth of jewellery in total.
The couple also got to enjoy some custom bottles of Moët & Chandon champagne before the big arrival at the event. It was in 2017 at the Met Gala that Priyanka and Nick walked a red carpet together for the first time. They weren’t an official couple when they posed together on the red carpet that year, but the photographs sparked speculation that perhaps a romance was brewing between the two.
Trollers have a field day
Priyanka Chopra Jonas may have matched the ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’ theme at the MET Gala, but the actress’ shimmery avatar with an exaggerated hairdo didn’t impress social media users, who had a field day trolling her for picking the brave look.
The theme for this year’s MET Gala was ‘Camp: Notes on Fashion’. It was inspired by Susan Sontag’s 1964 essay “Notes on Camp”. In her essay, Susan had explained: “The essence of Camp is its love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” According to this, Priyanka got the look “spot on”, said designer Wendell Rodricks.
However, for some social media users, the look was all about the ‘Shock Laga, Shock Laga’ moment. Some others compared it with Lasith Malinga and another section of Twitter users questioned whether she took inspiration from the Mad Hatter from “Adventures in Wonderland”. Many mocked her hairstyle, which reminded some people of a scene from Bollywood film Chaalbaaz in which actress Sridevi put make-up on her aunt.
Congratulations!
The MET Gala may have been keeping Priyanka Chopra Jonas busy, but the actress ensured she gave an Instagram shout-out on the arrival of her friend Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s first baby.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex welcomed a son on Monday. Priyanka posted a screenshot of the royals’ announcement and wrote, “Congratulations M & H.” She also added a pink heart emoji on the graphic. Quantico star Priyanka and former Suits actress Meghan have been friends for long.
Isha Ambani shines
Mukesh and Nita Ambani’s daughter Isha Ambani turned many heads with her breathtaking look. Isha opted for a beautiful soft lilac creation by Prabal Gurung, the designer who styled actress Deepika Padukone’s look for last year’s Met Gala. Going with this year’s Met Gala theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, Isha wore a haute couture gown with a plunging neckline, featuring feather all over the skirt and embellishments on torso of the gown, which also featured a gorgeous long train.
She completed her princess-like look with a diamond neck piece and drop earrings. The designer had previously given a sneak-peek to Isha’s look few hours before the celebrations on Instagram.
Four outfits
Singer-actress Lady Gaga made a grand Met Gala entrance with four outfit changes on the pink carpet. Her first look was in a Brandon Maxwell-designed neon pink cape dress, which featured an extra-long train. The 33-year-old Oscar-winning singer accessorised with an oversized matching-coloured bow in her hair.
Next, Gaga surprised fans when she took off her first look to reveal a black strapless couture gown underneath, which she paired with a black umbrella. For her third change, she wore a bright pink column dress, which she paired with oversized sunglasses. For her final look, Gaga ditched the dresses, opting to strip down into a glittering brassier and underwear set with fishnets and huge platform shoes.
Deepika turns Barbie
Actress Deepika Padukone made waves by taking on a Barbie avatar in a Zac Posen gown. She opted for Zac Posen’s metallic pink lurex jacquard gown embellished with 3D printed pieces meant to resemble embroidery.
In sync with this year’s theme “Camp: Notes on Fashion”, Deepika stepped out in an exaggerated version of Barbie. She added drama to her look with a voluminous high ponytail adding a little sparkle with the bejewelled pink hair band, dramatic burgundy lips and purple eye make-up. She completed her look with a pair of diamond earrings and a statement cuff.
This is Deepika’s third outing at the event. She made her debut at the gala in 2017 in a simple white slip-dress by Tommy Hilfiger. Last year, the actress wore an elegant red Prabal Gurung gown with red heels. — IANS
