Malmo (Sweden), May 8
Young Indian Grandmaster Nihal Sarin stormed back into title contention with a crushing victory over world junior champion Parham Maghsoodloo of Iran in the fifth round of TePe Sigeman & Co. chess tournament here.
With just two rounds left in the category-17 event, Sarin shares the third spot with Liviu-Dieter Nisipeanu of Germany and Nils Grandelius of Sweden.
The top-seeded Indian, Pentala Harikrishna, was held to a draw by Ivan Saric of Croatia but remained in joint lead on 3.5 points alongside England’s Gawain Jones, who split points with Nisipeanu. Maghsoodloo and Hillarp-Persson of Sweden were joint sixth with two points each. Saric was last with 1.5 points to his name.
“I spent a lot of time agonising over the loss against Harikrishna in the previous round,” Sarin said. — PTI
