‘I live to eat’

You have done movies around the world in multiple languages. How has been the experience so far?

The greatest joy besides, of course, the work itself are the people and places. In Purulia, I met Mahashweta Devi in her living room as she entertained us with her stories of revolution.

Mentalhood is a show where a mother’s life is being shown. How did you prepare for the role?

I play Preity Khosla, a warm, Punjabi woman who makes up for her lack of ‘proficiency in English’ with her warmth and unique style of dressing up. The preparation was largely in getting Preity’s tone right. Ritu, the writer of the show, really helped me with that.

How was your equation with co-actors Karisma Kapoor, Sandhya Mridul, Shruti Seth and Shilpa Shukla?

Each of them are so wonderfully unique and strong. Karisma comes with stories of a pioneer, Sandhya will regale you with her impersonations and Shruti is such a delightful and no-nonsense person and mother in real life too. Shilpa, I am utterly mesmerised by her.

How are web shows different from movies? Do you think there should be censorship on web series?

Personally, I feel censorship is pretty lame and I am not in favour of this brand of moral policing. But also, a lack of censorship has given birth to work that is merely titillating and thriving on shock value.

When not shooting, what do you prefer to do?

Currently I have no free time, but when I do, I am reading and thinking about what to eat. I live to eat. I carry local ingredients from wherever I travel and come back to Bombay and recreate meals.

What’s next in the pipeline?

I am going to start shoot for Madhuja Mukherjee’s film in Kolkata next month. It’s a good script and largely in Bangla.
