NEW DELHI, MAY 13

The Left will approach the last round of parliamentary elections in West Bengal with a fresh strategy to wrest back the seats located in southern parts of the state in the backdrop of large-scale violence witnessed during the penultimate round of the elections in the state yesterday.

Elections will be held in nine constituencies —  Barasat, Basirhat, Dum Dum, Jadavpur, Jaynagar, Kolkata North, Kolkata South, Mathurapur and Diamond Harbour, which were won by the ruling TMC in the last General Election. While the CPM is contesting six of these, one each is fought by Left Front constituents — the CPI, AIFB and the RSP.

The southern parts of the state, consisting of Kolkata and its suburbs, are considered a TMC stronghold, which the Left wants to breach to give a message of its revival. The projection of its comeback trail is important for Left’s  political future, including the next Assembly elections.

Keeping in view the symbolic value of electoral performance in the final round of elections, the Left has re-strategised to match up to the dominant TMC and simultaneously to keep the assertive BJP at bay. “We are doing our best, but the TMC and BJP are playing foul,” said CPI leader in Rajya Sabha D Raja.
