Maid in heaven, groomed on earth

At Indian weddings, we either go big or we don’t go home until then! Which is why, there’s no doing away with our long-held traditions and ceremonies, but making them rub shoulders with western concepts.  Our very own sangeet, jaago, happily share space (actually schedules) with bridal showers, bachelor nights. There’s not a couple in the past decade-and-a-half that hasn’t had a wedding cake ordered with even horseshoe on it for good luck (we basically love tradition, be it anybody’s).

Then there are bridesmaids and groomsmen increasingly making their way at almost every wedding.  Earlier this year, Alia Bhatt playing the happy bridesmaid at one of her bestie’s wedding with a caption ‘Find your tribe, love them hard.’ We take a look at city folks who had theirs.

Special feeling

Originally hailing from Jalandhar and now settled in Mumbai, travel show host Seep Taneja had as many three bridesmaids for her engagement itself. She laughs, “They took care of everything. I was so relieved. There were so many last-moment problems, but they didn’t let me bother about anything at all. From fetching me tea to getting my stuff sorted and carrying my 17-feet long train throughout the function for me, they did it all.” We wonder what she will do for her wedding in November.

Ludhiana-based lawyer Gurkirpal Singh Gill feels they make sense, especially at Indian weddings where the guest list is endless. For his spring wedding in the March of 2017, he had as many as 13 groomsmen in attendance. Just in case the number sounds a bit overwhelming, he smiles, “My brother Navkaran Singh Gill had as many as 22 groomsmen.”  Weddings are all about special moments and this is one of those instances that add to the special bit. “You feel accompanied, you feel special. Apart from that there is also some method behind the madness. This way, it becomes a little easier to identify the groom’s tribe and the girl’s tribe since there is an influx of so many new faces. The co-ordinated guys at the wedding are the core people to whom you can walk up to anytime for any query or problem.”

Colour scheme

Precisely why Chandigarh-based lawyer Mavpreet Singh Walia decided to have his friends deck up in similar colour scheme for his wedding.  Assistant advocate general Devaki Anand Sullar shares why she had as many as eight bridesmaids at her wedding in the December of 2015.  “It’s an East meets West kind of thing, but it makes sense in Indian context as well. We always have the groom’s sisters-in-law doing several ceremonies together, so we just decided to deck them in a similar colour scheme.” Now settled in Chandigarh after marriage, Shubhpreet Kaur Chhina was browsing through pictures for wedding ideas when she stumbled upon the bridesmaids pictures. “At NRI weddings this concept has always been there.” She had 12 on her D-day, all dressed in turquoise blue while she was in a magenta outfit. “They get you food to a hundred things you require assistance with. They never left the stage.” Now who wouldn’t like that?  This before we soon find a way to fit in the rehearsal dinners too. May be right after the jaago!
