Never say die

Gurnaaz Kaur

From Amritsar to Mumbai. That’s the long and short of Gaurav Sareen’s journey. A school student who liked Hrithink Roshan to the extent that he decided to copy what the actor was doing without knowing what acting really was.

Some years later it was time to move to Mumbai and live that idea. “I used to imitate Hrithik, follow his dance moves, talk and walk like him. My school days went idolising him. I was fascinated with the idea of having people around me, recognising me when I walk on a road, and that’s what made me want to be an actor.”

Wanting and having are two different things. To be where Gaurav is today, it has taken four years of struggle and perseverance. After giving over 2,500 plus auditions for all possible production houses in two years, nothing seemed to be working in his favour. Some ads as the supporting cast was all that luck offered him. Back home, his father decided it was time to come back and start afresh. After all, he wanted his son to be an IPS officer.

“My dad had been supportive but there came a point when he thought it was waste of time and money. I went back with a heavy heart but till the last day I was giving auditions.” Fifteen days of being in Amritsar and Gaurav got a call to join Ek Diwana Tha as the lead actress’ brother. Call it the turning point or the reason to be back in Mumbai, he has since been in luck. As the first show ended, he got his break as a lead in Krishna Chali London. For one year, he played a Kanpuriya character, who is illiterate but lovable. “It was a great experience for me, not only because it gave me something substantial in career but it made me showcase my talent as an actor.” Gaurav gets calls and messages of appreciation from his fans and colleagues. It is quite like the dream he once nurtured, of being known. Now, he is busy portraying Sameer, the lead actor in Colors’ Udaan. It’s a love story where he plays a journalist.

“I am that boy next door, sincere and sweet. Maybe I look very charming, so I get such characters,” he laughs. But he doesn’t want us to go by his looks. With much confidence he says, “I am a versatile actor. I believe that I can play any kind of role.” There is no experience to support this statement though and he confirms, “Yes, I am not an acting school pass out, nor have I done theatre, but the initial two years were my learning period. Surviving without money, I’ve done it all. I learnt how to groom myself; I observed people and that improved my acting.”

That was about the past. Today, he is going with the flow and making sure to be his best at what he has, and cherish it too.
