New Delhi, May 27
Newly elected BSP MP from Ghosi, Atul Rai — who has been on the run after being accused of raping a college student in Varanasi — today withdrew his petition seeking protection from arrest after the SC refused to grant him relief.
A Vacation Bench of Chief Justice Ranjan Gogoi and Justice Aniruddha Bose said it was not inclined to entertain Rai’s petition. Earlier, the top court had refused to grant him interim protection from arrest.
At one stage, the Bench ordered dismissal of his petition but later allowed his counsel to withdraw it. Accordingly, the petition was “dismissed as withdrawn”. Rai, who won as an SP-BSP candidate from Ghosi in UP, had moved the SC on May 14, seeking protection from arrest in a rape case registered against him on May 1 on a complaint by a college student. She alleged that he took her to his home on the pretext of introducing her to his wife and sexually assaulted her. — TNS
