New Delhi, May 30
Hailed as the Chanakya of present-day politics, Amit Shah, who as BJP president meticulously crafted the handsome return of the Modi regime, has been inducted into the Union Cabinet.
Shah is all set to combine his astute political mind with his delivery skills to help his mentor, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in implementing his governance agenda in the next five years.
Shah’s induction signals that he will now act as the eyes and ears of the Prime Minister in the government.
However, given the sequence in which the members of the Council of Ministers took oath, Rajnath Singh appeared to have officially retained the No. 2 position in the government.
For all practical purposes, Shah has been the party’s second most powerful leader after Modi since he became its president in 2014 after the BJP-led NDA assumed power. Shah made his debut in the Lok Sabha with a massive win from Gandhinagar, a seat earlier represented by BJP veteran LK Advani.
Shah (54) was a crucial aide to Modi during his near 13-year reign as the Gujarat CM between 2001 and 2014, holding the Home portfolio. Many say he was instrumental in executing a slew of welfare policies in Gujarat.
His organisational skills have been much documented ever since he delivered 71 of 80 LS seats in Uttar Pradesh in 2014, prompting Modi to call him “man of the match”.
Maneka may be pro-tem Speaker
New Delhi: Eight-time BJP MP Maneka Gandhi, 62, is likely to be the Pro-tem Speaker in the 17th Lok Sabha. The main duty of the Pro-tem Speaker is to administer oath of office to new MPs, besides presiding over the first meeting of Lower House of Parliament and the sitting in which the Speaker and Deputy Speaker are elected.
