Hyderabad, May 7
The proposed meeting between Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrasekhar Rao (KCR) and DMK president MK Stalin may not take place on May 13 as proposed.
KCR’s daughter and Nizamabad MP K Kavitha has said that there was no confirmation of the meeting and clarity would emerge only after her father returns from his five-day visit to Kerala.
The Chief Minister’s Office neither confirmed nor denied the developments, but it is said that Stalin has gone back on his proposal to meet the Telangana CM, saying he was busy in campaigning for the upcoming May 19 byelections for four Tamil Nadu Assembly constituencies.
He apparently does not want to take any chances before the Lok Sabha polls are announced on May 23. Stalin has an alliance with the Congress in Tamil Nadu, while the Congress is part of the “mahagathbandan” proposed by Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief N Chandrababu Naidu.
KCR has resumed his proposal to activate “federal front” that will comprise non-BJP and non-Congress parties. Since KCR supported YSR Congress in Andhra Pradesh against the TDP, which in turn is with the Congress, Stalin who is also with the Congress did not want to send a wrong signal by meeting KCR before he knows the exact position of the numbers each party gets.
According to DMK officials, no confirmation has been communicated to KCR for the May 13 meeting. Stalin had proposed Congress chief Rahul Gandhi’s name for the PM’s post and continues to stick to that. On the other hand, KCR is trying to promote a non-BJP, non-Congress front.
Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan said his meeting with KCR was of great “significance”, adding that the regional parties would play a major role in forming the government. They had a two-hour closed-door meeting at the Kerala CM’s residence late last evening.
