Celebrating their 20 years of excellence in theatre, the Suchetak Rangmanch-Mohali is organising four-day Suchetak Theatre Festival-2019. Supported by the Punjab Sangeet Natak Akademi and the Chandigarh Sangeet Natak Akademi, the festival opens at Randhawa Auditorium-Punjab Kala Bhavan starting from May 1.
Here is the brief of Punjabi plays to be staged in the festival.
June 1 & 2: Chall Amritsar London Challiye
Written by poet playwright Shabdeesh, the play, Chall Amritsar London Challiye, depicts a realistic and idealistic account of life of Shaheed Udham Singh between the Jallianwalabagh massacre and the martyrdom of Udham Singh in London. The 100-minute gripping drama while dwelling initially on the story of young Sher Singh’s journey from Sunam to an asylum, and then to become Udham Singh, offers certain contradictions to the conventional story with fresh observations put forth by playwright Shabdeesh.
June 3: Mann Mitti Da Boleya
Solo performances are a rarity in the region and short lived too but the poignant Punjabi play Mann Mitti Da Boleya with a rare thematic content is an exception. Written by Shabdeesh and directed and enacted by Anita Shabdeesh is a veritable tribute to Bibi Mukhataran Mai of Meerwala village in Pakistan and many courageous women who fought back the contemptuous culprits. The play brings alive the pain, anguish of the illiterate innocent young women and how Mukhtaran took on by educating the rural adolescent girls who could stand up to the affluent high caste people and live with dignity.
June 4: Talaaq
Written by Kirpal Kazak and directed by Lakha Lehiri for the Sarthak Rang Manch-Patiala the play Talaaq provides the grand finale to the festival. The acclaimed playwright has made an analysis of relationships in all its manifestations.
