The German national with a special affinity for cows, Friederike Irina Bruning, has recanted her threat to return her Padma Shri. Bruning, who has been tending to cows in Vrindavan, Mathura, for over three decades, is locally known as Sudevi Mataji. Last week, she threatened to return the Padma Shri after the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) rejected her application for visa extension.
The MEA, however, points out that Bruning is here on a student visa and that existing rules do not provide for its conversion into an employment visa. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has sought a report on the issue. Thanking her, Bruning has now submitted a fresh application. “I am grateful to her.” The signs are that her visa will be extended.
Bruning, the moving spirit behind Radha Surabhi Goshala which she helped set up over 20 years ago, said the award would be of no use to her if she was to be separated from the cows in Vrindavan. The goshala now looks after nearly 2,000 cows and calves abandoned by their owners.
