New Delhi, June 8

Continuing with inorganic growth path in West Bengal in its bid to match the organisational strength of ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC), the BJP today inducted 17 councillors of Darjeeling Municipal Corporation.

Buoyed by the success in the recently held Lok Sabha elections, the BJP has been on a spree in West Bengal to induct MLAs and councillors to its fold.

All councillors, who were earlier with the hill-based Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJM), joined the saffron camp in the presence of senior party leaders Mukul Roy and Kailash Vijayvargiya.

Roy, who is considered to be party’s sherpa in West Bengal, told reporters that the party has now majority in the Darjeeling Municipal Corporation. The BJP recently had wrested power in four other municipal corporations in the state by inducting councillors on a mass scale. Besides, the party has so for inducted five MLAs from the ranks of the TMC and CPM.

BJP national general secretary Kailash Vijayvargia, who is incharge of the state, condemned violence against victory processions of the party leaders in the state. Incidentally, BJP’s Lok Sabha MP Dilip Ghosh’s victory procession witnessed violence on Saturday. — TNS
