44 die as bus rolls down Kullu gorge

Kullu/Mandi, June 20

As many as 44 persons were killed and 35 injured when a private bus (HP-65-7065) rolled down a gorge near Bheot Mor on the Banjar-Gada Gushaini road in Banjar sub-division of Kullu district in Himachal Pradesh today  The 42-seater bus was on its way to Gada Gushaini from Aut.

SDM MR Bhardwaj said rescue teams and ambulances were rushed to the spot and the victims taken to Banjar hospital. Nine critically injured were shifted to a Kullu hospital. 

Free treatment was being provided to the injured and interim relief disbursed to the affected. A team of doctors was also called from the Kullu hospital.

The SDM said the number of deceased could increase as the condition of some of the injured was critical. The cause of accident was yet to be ascertained, he added.

The injured included school and college students from Banjar who were returning home. 

Eyewitnesses said the bus was overcrowded and the driver probably lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a turn. The rescuers had a tough time in extricating the victims from the vehicle and the gorge, they said.

Meanwhile, Governor Acharya Dev Vrat and Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur have expressed grief over the loss of lives. The CM has asked the administration to provide the best possible treatment to the injured, besides ordering a magisterial probe to ascertain the reason behind the accident.

Transport Minister Govind Singh Thakur left for the spot from Shimla to take stock of the situation.

The Kullu administration has provided Rs 50,000 as immediate relief to the kin of deceased and injured. 

Among the deceased was Mohan Lal, a photographer with a vernacular daily, and his 19-year-old daughter. He was based in Patiala.
