New Delhi, June 5

After the 16th Lok Sabha went down in history as one of the least productive, the BJP-led government today opened early talks with the Opposition ahead of the first session of the newly constituted Lok Sabha commencing June 17.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Prahlad Joshi called on Leader of Opposition in the Rajya Sabha and veteran Congressman Ghulam Nabi Azad on the occasion of Eid and also sought cooperation of the principal Opposition party in running Parliament smoothly and cooperating in legislative business.

Joshi was accompanied by his colleagues Ministers of State for Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal and V Muraleedharan to Azad’s official residence to share Eid greetings and courtesies. In political circles, the gesture was being seen as PM Narendra Modi-led NDA government’s attempts to build bridges with the Opposition after a bitter Lok Sabha 2019 poll campaign.

The government is expected to call a meeting of the leaders of various parties on June 16 to discuss agenda for the first session of 17th Lok Sabha to be held from June 17 to July 26, with the Budget on July 5.

Opposition parties will also meet ahead of the session to plan floor coordination.
