Opposing the statutory resolution in the Lok Sabha to extend President’s rule in Jammu and Kashmir, Congress MP Manish Tewari today said an elected government in the state was in the interest of the nation and would help the Centre in its fight terrorism.
“If the Lok Sabha elections could be held peacefully, where is the need to extend the President’s rule in the state,” Tewari questioned, holding “ideologically incompatible” BJP and PDP responsible for further “alienating people” in the state that had been put on the “path of normalcy by the Congress’ Manmohan Singh government”.
Opposing the resolution moved by Home Minister Amit Shah, Tewari spoke of steps taken by consecutive Congress governments to ensure normalcy in the state.
“Pakistan, not people of J&K, is responsible for the situation in the state. Today if the situation has reached the point where the President’s rule is being extended, it is because of the BJP and the PDP,” he claimed.
Tewari told Shah that the government “can win the fight against terrorism only if people are with you”, citing the case of Punjab “where there has been no major incident after 1995”.
J&K has been under Governor’s rule since the BJP exit the alliance with Mehbooba Mufti’s People’s Democratic Party last year.
Tewari also objected to the Jammu and Kashmir Reservation (Amendment) Bill, 2019, being moved by the Centre. He said his party had no objections to the spirit of the Bill only that it should have come out of the state Assembly. “We have no objection to giving reservation to the people living on the IB, only the way it is being done. Ideally elections should have been held and the Assembly should have cleared the Bill,” he said.
According to Shah, 3.5 lakh people living along the International Border (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir will benefit from the legislation.
