After a rather controversial swearing-in ceremony of new members laced with religious and political slogans, the ruling BJP kicked off the first working week of the new Parliament —the 17th Lok Sabha — on the front foot and all eyes are now on the coming week with important legislations and Union Budget lined up.

Home Minister Amit Shah, in his first legislative business as the Union Minister on Friday, made a powerful pitch of his government’s plans for strife-torn Jammu and Kashmir, completely demolishing Opposition’s attempts to stall him.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, replying on the President’s address, gave important talking points, including his condemnation of lynching a Muslim man in Jharkhand and advice to opposition Congress on ways to bounce back, politically.

Offshore too he scored with bilateral meetings with Indonesia, Brazil, Turkey, Australia, Singapore and Chile on issues related to trade, counter-terrorism, defence, maritime security and sports and US President Donald Trump saying, “Indo-US ties have never been better than this.”

On Monday, Law Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad will move for consideration and passing the contentious Aadhaar and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2019, to amend the Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Act, 2016, and further to amend the Indian Telegraph Act, 1885, and the Prevention of Money Laundering Act, 2002.

His colleague Ashwini Kumar Choubey will also be moving the Indian Medical Council (Amendment) Bill, 2019, in the face of “disapproving resolution” by Opposition leaders NK Premachandran, Adhir Ranjan Chiowdhury, Shashi Tharoor and Saugata Roy.

It is expected that the government may also move for consideration and passage another contentious law — Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Bill, 2019 — this week. Last week it tabled the fresh version of the controversial Bill to replace the ordinance amid attempts by Opposition to stall it.

On July 5, Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will present her first maiden full Budget for the current fiscal year. Analysts are expecting her to “tweak fiscal levers” and provide the much-needed boost to the Indian economy to put it on faster track.
