In her first post-poll remarks, AICC general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has blamed Congress workers for not working diligently enough to secure a win for the party.
A visibly miffed Priyanka, AICC general secretary in charge of East UP, on Wednesday blamed the workers in Rae Bareli for the reduced victory margins of her mother and former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi. Sonia won just by a little over 1 lakh votes this time as against an average of over 3 lakh earlier.
“This win is attributable to the people of Rae Bareli and to Sonia ji. You have all made me stand here to speak to you. The truth will sound bitter. Those who wholeheartedly worked for the party know it in their hearts. Those of you who didn’t work, well I am going to find it out,” Priyanka said in remarks that became a centre of discussion in party circles as the blame shifted to workers.
Sonia Gandhi also yesterday attempted to explain the party losses in terms of alleged EVM malfunctions when she said during her thanksgiving tour of Rae Bareli that over the past few years several questions had been asked of India’s election system and processes. “There is no smoke without fire,” she said, signalling the Congress strategy of relating party’s poor show to alleged EVM issues.
Meanwhile, Priyanka has declared that the party will fight the 2022 UP Assembly election without any alliance. At a review meeting with the defeated candidates and party presidents of 40 districts in Rae Bareli, Priyanka asked them not to be disheartened and move on to prepare for the battle ahead.
However, refusing to reflect on why the party failed, many leaders want her to be the party’s CM face in 2022. Varanasi ex-MP Rajesh Misra said: “We are requesting Priyanka to strengthen the party...we have conveyed to her that she should become the CM face to challenge the BJP.”
