Lucknow, June 27
Newly elected BSP MP from Ghosi, Atul Rai, currently lodged in Varanasi jail, has sought permission to travel to New Delhi under police protection to take oath of office as a Member of Parliament.
His counsel Anuj Yadav has sought permission from the court of Judicial Magistrate Ashutosh Tiwari to go to New Delhi to take the oath of office.
Rai had contested election as a mahagathbandhan candidate from Ghosi in Mau district and won while he was absconding after he was booked for rape during election campaign at Lanka police station in Varanasi.
He surrendered in court on June 22 and was subsequently sent to judicial custody.
Fearing for his life inside the jail, his counsel has also pleaded for better security and permission to eat home-cooked food.
The matter will come up for hearing on June 28. The first session of the 17th Lok Sabha is on and will conclude on July 26.
