Signalling zero tolerance for anti-party activities following parliamentary election loss, the Congress today cracked the whip against “indisciplined” workers in Rajasthan putting a lawmaker on notice for scathing public remarks against Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot.

The Congress further warned all other leaders in the state to stay in discipline or face action. After days of bickering in the state organisation, AICC Rajasthan general secretary Avinash Pande today sent a notice to Todabhim MLA Prithviraj Meena who on Wednesday said Gehlot should take moral responsibility for the party’s debacle and pave the way for his deputy Sachin Pilot.

“We should put party interests ahead of state interests and not work under motivated personal agenda,” Pande said in his message to Rajasthan workers and leaders. He said the events of last few days undermined the party’s image. “Congress is a national party but remains confined to some states. Wherever we are in power, our objective is to fulfil the promises made to people. You are all requested to stay in discipline and not make statements that give an impression that you are working to further a motivated personal agenda,” Pande said.

He said such out-of-line statements provided a ready fodder to the BJP. “This tantamount to doing the rival’s job,” said Pande after a bitter cold war between Gehlot and Pilot.

Pande said it was everyone’s collective responsibility to ensure the party’s image was not sullied. “We should rather like disciplined soldiers of the party present an example of unity. History is testimony that even 10 disciplined workers are enough to counter thousands of opponents and are able to sustain their organisation,” the Congress state in charge said.

The open back and forth between Gehlot and Pilot supporters began after reports that Congress chief Rahul Gandhi taunted Gehlot in the May 25 CWC meeting for keeping his son before the party in Rajasthan and failing to win a single LS seat of 25 in the state.
