Now, RLD to go solo in UP

Lucknow, June 5

A day after the SP and the BSP decided to contest alone all 11 seats in the forthcoming Assembly bypolls, their third alliance partner in the recent Lok Sabha elections—RLD — today announced that it would also go solo.

Rashtriya Lok Dal UP president Masood Ahmad, however, expressed hope that the “gathbandhan” remained intact.

“The Rashtriya Lok Dal will contest the UP Assembly bypolls on its own. However, it is too early to comment on the political scene in the state,” he said.

Party chief Chaudhary Ajit Singh and Jayant Chaudhary would decide on the number of seats the party would contest and the matter might be discussed during a meeting over the next few days, Ahmad said.

When asked about the RLD’s role in the new political landscape of the state, which sends the highest number of 80 MPs to the Lok Sabha, Ahmad said, “The RLD was with the Samajwadi Party. We got the seats from the quota of Akhilesh”.

The UP RLD chief said the Congress should also be a part of the ‘gathbandhan’. The BJP won 62 of 80 seats in the state while the opposition alliance bagged just 15, with the BSP winning 10 and the SP five.

The Congress got one seat and the BJP ally Apna Dal (S) two. Eleven assembly bypolls are due in UP after the respective MLAs won the Lok Sabha polls. — PTI

UP Alliance was trial: Akhilesh

  • As the SP-BSP alliance unravelled in Uttar Pradesh, Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav on Wednesday described the tie-up as a “trial” and said it may not always be successful, but helps in realising shortcomings
  • BSP chief Mayawati on Tuesday declared that her party would contest the Assembly bypoll alone, prompting Akhilesh to say his SP was also ready to go solo
