After its rout in the Lok Sabha elections, the Congress today made the first move at organisational overhaul by dissolving all district committees in Uttar Pradesh and forming a panel to go into “gross indiscipline during the elections”.

Besides, Congress president Rahul Gandhi today resumed official meetings today after days of withdrawal from work as party chief.

He met Chhattisgarh CM Bhupesh Baghel and is expected to meet leaders of election-bound Haryana on June 27 and leaders of another poll-bound state Jharkhand soon.

Meanwhile, AICC general secretary organisation KC Venugopal today ordered setting up of a three-member disciplinary panel to look into cases of “gross indiscipline in Uttar Pradesh during the General Election.”

The committee was announced close on the heels of party general secretary East UP Priyanka Vadra warning at a Rae Bareli event that she will find out who did not “put their hearts into working for the Congress”.

Congress Legislature Party leader in UP Ajay Lallu has been given the charge of organisational overhaul in East UP. West UP in charge will be announced by Jyotiraditya Scindia, AICC general secretary incharge of West UP.

The party also said a two-member team will be formed to oversee the due Assembly bypoll in UP.

With Priyanka incharge of East UP and Scindia of West UP, the Congress won just one Lok Sabha seat — Sonia Gandhi’s Rae Bareli — out of 80 in UP.

It lost Amethi which it had won along with Rae Bareli in 2014. Minister Smriti Irani defeated Congress chief Rahul Gandhi by over half a lakh votes in Amethi this time. The Congress appears to be determined to start its introspection for loss by “looking for black sheep” in the party.

But a veteran Congress leader today said, “A disciplinary panel is not such a great starting point for election loss introspection in UP. We must decide what we want. Do we want to boost the morale of workers or do we want to undermine it further?”

The Congress is yet to sit and debate why it lost the 2019 General Election.

A vague debate on the issue took place in the May 25 Congress Working Committee meeting which soon degenerated into a “blame game”, with no concrete takeaways.

The meeting saw Rahul telling the CWC to look for a non-Gandhi Congress president and the CWC authorising Gandhi to “overhaul Congress at all levels”.

Not much has been heard of that overhaul since nor the status of Congress chief is clear.
