It was a special moment for 72-year-old Rajamma Vavathil, a retired nurse, when Congress president Rahul Gandhi hugged and held her hand in Kozhikode on Sunday, 49 years after she took him in her hands as a newborn at a Delhi hospital. Sleepwell founder, ex-MP Sheela Gautam dead
Lucknow: Sheela Gautam, a four-time BJP Member of Parliament from Aligarh in Uttar Pradesh and the founder-chairperson of the famed mattress company Sleepwell, has died in the national capital. She was 88. She entered politics with the Congress in 1980. In 1991, she joined the BJP and became an MP for the first time. IANS
Trawlers banned off Kerala coast for 52 days
Thiruvananthapuram: Starting Sunday midnight, a 52-day monsoon-trawling ban will be imposed in Kerala's coastal waters for the 31st year in succession. It will prohibit around 5,000 trawl-boats from venturing any closer than 12 nautical miles to stop damage to the breeding process of fish during the season. Any boat which breaks these rules will be fined Rs 2.5 lakh. IANS
Agra green push: Over 1 crore saplings
Agra: Come July-August, the UP Forest Department has announced planting of a record 1.02 crore saplings to tackle a spike in the air pollution figures in the eco-sensitive Taj Trapezium Zone. Work on preparing planting sites has already begun. The target for Agra city is 28,57,000. Mainpuri, Firozabad and Mathura will also plant lakhs of saplings. However, green activists wondered where the space would come for planting so many saplings. IANS
