SC refuses extension for counselling

New Delhi, June 21

The Supreme Court today refused to extend the counselling schedule for filling up 603 vacant seats in post-graduate medical and dental courses in deemed universities and private colleges.

Deemed universities and colleges had claimed that they have around 1,000 seats vacant in the post-graduate medical courses and if the stray vacancy counselling round was extended, such seats could be filled.

On Friday, a Vacation Bench headed by Justice Deepak Gupta disposed of a plea by the Education Promotion Society of India — a registered group of over 1,300 educational institutions — seeking to extend the counselling to facilitate admission against vacant seats.

The last date of counselling for PG medical courses was on May 31. The society had said it was given five days to complete the admissions in the stray vacancy round, which was insufficient. — TNS
