Shah takes charge, meets J&K Guv, ‘no state poll talk’

New Delhi, June 1

BJP president Amit Shah today stepped into his new role as the Union Home Minister by assuming office at the North Block, two days after he took oath of office and secrecy for the first time as a Cabinet minister in Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government.

Shah, 54, was received by Union Home Secretary Rajiv Gauba, Director of Intelligence Bureau Rajiv Jain and other senior officials as he arrived to take charge around noon.

In a Twitter post, Shah wrote: “Took over as the Home Minister. I express my gratitude to the PM for believing in me. The security of the country and the welfare of the countrymen is the top priority of the Modi government. I will make every effort to complete it.”

Soon after taking charge, he called a meeting of senior officials, where he reviewed the functioning of 18 departments. Sources said as the meeting lasted an hour-and-a-half, the Kashmir division got special attention.

Jammu and Kashmir Governor Satya Pal Malik also called on the Home Minister and discussed with him the prevailing situation in the state.

After the meeting, the Governor said he briefed Shah “about the ground situation in the state” and “the development and circumstances” prevailing. He said: “We are prepared for the Amarnath yatra with people’s support.”

The Governor, however, said the issue of holding elections in the state was not on the agenda, as the issue is in the Election Commission’s domain. “Therefore, I had no talks about elections.”

Shah takes over the Home Ministry from Rajnath Singh, who has been given the Defence portfolio, a move that could be seen as a pared-down posting despite being within the “Big 4” grouping of Home, Finance, Defence and External Affairs. — TNS
