Mumbai, July 19
Sixteen persons, including a woman, lost their lives in separate incidents on Mumbai’s railway tracks today.
According to the Government Railway Police (GRP), three deaths each were reported at Thane and Kurla railway stations, while two each were reported in the jurisdiction of Dombivli and Kalyan stations. One death each was reported from Vashi, Panvel, Mumbai Central, Bandra, Borivli and Vasai railway stations.
The GRP blamed all deaths on “trespassing”. Either the victims fell off crowded trains or were run over while trying to cross the tracks. Thirteen persons were admitted to hospitals after falling off different trains today, according to the police.
According to the railway police, 2,734 persons lost their lives on train tracks in 2018, as compared to 3,014 deaths the previous year. The number of deaths touched a high of 3,423 in 2014 after which the Western and Central Railway authorities took some measures, including construction of safety barriers between tracks to prevent people from darting across.
