Lucknow, July 31

SP MLA from Swar Tanda (Rampur) Abdullah Azam Khan, son of Rampur MP Azam Khan, was detained for reportedly causing obstruction during search operation of Mohammad Ali Jauhar University, triggering a protest by party workers today. He was later released on a personal bond.

Rampur SP Ajay Pal said when the police team entered the campus this morning on the second consecutive day to investigate the charges of stolen books from Rampur’s Raza Library and Madarsa Aliya being found in the university, Abdullah reportedly created hurdles in government work.

“Till now, 2,000 stolen books bearing the stamp of the madarsa library have been recovered from the university, founded by Azam Khan, in the raid,” the police said.

The police said a report in this connection had been lodged by the Madarsa Aliya on June 16. The police even arrested four persons in this regard.

However, Azam Khan denied the allegations claiming that the police had brought the books with them and planted them in the university library. He also charged the police of entering the campus without the Vice-Chancellor’s permission.

The SP has given a call to its cadre to reach Rampur on August 1 in large numbers to express solidarity with Azam Khan.
