MUMBAI: Eminent industrialist and Birla Group patriarch Basant Kumar Birla passed away here on Wednesday after brief illness, official sources said. He was 98. The youngest son of legendary industrialist and philanthropist GD Birla, he joined business at the age of 15. Later, he became chairman of Kesoram Industries, Century Textiles and KC Trust and was associated with various educational institutions. IANS 

Security of official probing Bhola case scaled down

Jalandhar: The Punjab Police have scaled down the security of Niranjan Singh, Deputy Director of Enforcement Directorate, who has been investigating the Bhola drug case. The officer reportedly had five security guards, of whom three have been called back by the office of the Police Commissioner. The official is learnt to have sent an email to the DGP, asking him the reasons for the decision. TNS

4 Indian-Americans arrested for visa fraud 

Washington: Four Indian-American executives of two IT staffing companies have been arrested in the US on charges of fraudulently using the H-1B visa programme to gain an “unfair advantage” over their competitors, the justice department announced amidst a crackdown on the visa programme by the Trump administration. Vijay Mane, 39, Venkataramana Mannam, 47, and Fernando Silva, 53, from New Jersey, while Sateesh Vemuri, 52, from California were each charged by complaint with one count of conspiracy to commit visa fraud. All accused were released on $250,000 bond. PTI

Indian-origin driver held for killing wife, 3 others 

Washington: A 37-year-old Indian-origin truck driver was arrested in the US on charges of murdering his wife and three other relatives in April this year. Gurpreet Singh, the Ohio truck driver, has been arrested in Connecticut. He was being held in New Haven County pending extradition to Ohio to face four aggravated murder charges. The Butler County coroner said all four died from gunshot wounds to the head and each victim was shot at least twice. PTI

PM Modi to launch BJP membership drive on July 6

New Delhi: The ruling BJP is preparing for its next political pitch — a membership drive beginning July 6 to take the party to the next level. The countrywide campaign, with special focus on regions like Kashmir, Bengal, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala, will be launched by PM Narendra Modi from Varanasi, chief Amit Shah from Telangana and other party leaders from other parts of the country. MoD to take final call on tax on disability pension

New Delhi: A day after the Army and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman backed the taxation of disability pensions, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is learnt to have studied the matter and will take a final call on it. In other words, the statement tweeted yesterday to back taxation is not the final stance of the government. The official Twitter handle of the Army and the office of Sitharaman had tweeted an unsigned statement stating "some people were misusing the facility given to disabled soldiers as their pensions are exempt from income tax”. Agusta: ED attaches bank account of Khaitan’s wife

New Delhi: Initiating a major action against Ritu Khaitan, wife of AugustaWestland VVIP chopper scam accused Gautam Khaitan, the Enforcement Directorate on Wednesday said it had attached her ICICI Bank account, at Connaught Place branch, having Rs 7.49 lakh as part of its probe into a case under the PMLA against the couple. School principal killed by husband in her office

Nagpur: A government school principal was allegedly hacked to death by her estranged husband in her office in Gondia district on Tuesday. Deceased Pratibha Dongre worked as the principal of the zilla parishad school at Irritola. Around 11.15 am on Tuesday, Dilip Dongre, her husband, allegedly attacked her with an axe following a heated argument, killing her on the spot. PTI
