Former RAW official fined over PIL for PoK, Gilgit as LS seats

New Delhi, July 1

The Supreme Court on Monday rejected a petition that wanted it to direct the Centre to declare Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK) and Gilgit as two Lok Sabha seats.

“Is this a PIL? You are living in Delhi. What is your interest in PoK?” a Bench headed by Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi asked while dismissing the PIL even as the petitioner’s counsel said PoK and Gilgit were officially parts of India.

Terming former Research and Analysis Wing official Ram Kumar Yadav’s PIL as untenable, the Bench also imposed a cost of Rs 50,000 on him for wasting the court’s time.

Pointing out that India was the legitimate owner of Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit and there were 24 seats earmarked for these areas in the Jammu and Kashmir State Assembly, the petitioner’s counsel demanded that similarly, the government should be directed to declare Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit as two parliamentary seats. But the Bench was not impressed with his submissions and dismissed the petition. Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and Gilgit-Baltistan are directly controlled by the government in Islamabad. — TNS
