With the two sanctioned posts of teacher at the Government Middle School at Mohammad Bas here lying vacant for over two years, coming to the school for the 108 students means everything else but studies.
Some lessons in Hindi and Sanskrit do come at times, but only when Headmaster Surinder Singh isn’t preoccupied with administrative work. Otherwise, children mostly spend time running around on the campus, idling or chatting in the corridor or some occasional self-study. Whenever the Headmaster is away, the sweeper has to double up as the guardian.
“There have been occasions when I would be away to attend official meetings and my wife, who stays in Rohtak and comes visiting me fortnightly, would manage the affairs behind. Then there have been instances when I have had to request the junior wing teachers to look after the students,” said Surinder.
A Class VI student said understanding vacancies and sanctioned posts was beyond her and all she knew was she enjoyed coming to the school and having mid-day meals with her classmates. “All of us sit together and share our stories,” she said. A Class VIII student, busy copying from his textbook when The Tribune team visited the school, said the task had been assigned to him by the Headmaster.
Surinder said he had repeatedly brought the vacancies to the notice of the authorities concerned, but to no avail. “I joined here two years ago and have been consistently pursuing the matter. Panchayat members grumble and complain about lack of education, but all I can do is hear them out patiently,” he said.
District Education Officer Capt Indu Boken admitted there were a lot of vacancies in senior secondary, middle and primary schools in Mewat district and they couldn’t do anything about these at the moment.
